Pentaerythritol, white crystal or powder, flammable, easily esterified by common organic, widely used in the coating industry to produce alkyd resins, synthetic advanced lubricants, plasticizers, surfactants, and pharmaceuticals, explosives and other raw materials.
Nature and stability
1. Normal temperature and pressure do not decompose, avoid contact with strong oxidants, strong acids, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides. Combustible, hydroxyl groups in pentaerythritol can undergo esterification, nitration, halogenation, etherification and oxidation reactions. Forms a complex with a metal.
2. Basically non-toxic. No metabolic changes occur in the human body, but high blood sugar or diarrhea occurs when taking high doses. Skin and eyes are not stimulated or irritated by contact with a saturated solution of pentaerythritol.

Pentaerythritol is mainly used in the coatings industry and can be used to make alkyd coatings, which can improve the hardness, gloss and durability of coating films. It is also used as a raw material for rosin greases such as paints, varnishes and printing inks, and can be used for drying oils, smoldering coatings and aviation lubricants. Fatty acid esters of pentaerythritol are highly effective lubricants and polyvinyl chloride plasticizers, and epoxy derivatives are the raw materials for the production of non-free surfactants. Pentaerythritol readily forms complexes with metals and is also used as a hard water softener in detergent formulations. In addition, it is also used in the production of medicines, pesticides, etc. The pentaerythritol molecule contains four equivalent methylol groups and has a high degree of symmetry, and thus is often used as a raw material for preparing a polyfunctional compound. From its nitration, pentaerythritol tetranitrate (Taian, PETN) can be obtained, which is a strong explosive; esterification can obtain pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA), which is used as a coating.
As a flame retardant for adhesives, it can be combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to obtain an intumescent flame retardant. Also used as a crosslinking agent for polyurethanes, providing a branch within the polyurethane.
