Nature use

Instead of phosgene as a carbonylating agent

Although phosgene (Cl-CO-Cl) has high reactivity, its highly toxic and highly corrosive by-products are subject to enormous environmental pressures and will be phased out; DMC (CH3O-CO-OCH3) Similar to the nucleophilic reaction center, when the carbonyl group of DMC is attacked by nucleophilic attack, the acyl-oxygen bond is broken to form a carbonyl compound, and the by-product is methanol. Therefore, DMC can be used as a safe reaction reagent to synthesize carbonic acid derivatives instead of phosgene. Such as carbamate pesticides, polycarbonates, isocyanates, etc., of which polycarbonate will be the largest demand for DMC, it is predicted that more than 80% of DMC will be used to produce polycarbonate in 2005;

Instead of dimethyl sulfate as a methylating agent

For reasons similar to phosgene, dimethyl sulfate (CH3O-SO-OCH3) is also facing the pressure of being eliminated. When the methyl carbon of DMC is attacked by nucleophilic attack, its alkyl-oxygen bond is broken, and methyl group is also formed. The product is used, and the use of DMC has a higher yield and a simpler process than dimethyl sulfate. The main uses include synthetic organic intermediates, pharmaceutical products, pesticide products, etc.

Low toxic solvent

DMC has excellent solubility, narrow melting point, wide surface tension, low viscosity, low dielectric constant of medium, high evaporation temperature and fast evaporation rate, so it can be used as a low toxic solvent. Industrial and pharmaceutical industries. It can be seen from Table 1 that DMC is not only low in toxicity, but also has the characteristics of high flash point, low vapor pressure and high explosion limit in air, so it is a green solvent that combines cleanliness and safety.
